General Safety Instructions for Lashings

Planning

Before using lashings, plan and take in consideration:

  1. What will be secured?
  2. Nature of load (size, shape, weight)
  3. Method and environment of transport
  4. Lashing capacity, length and elongation
  5. How many lashings are needed (calculated according to EN12195-1)
  6. Fitting and removal of operations of lashing
  7. Where on the route will the load be unloaded

How to use

  1. Web lashings shall not be overloaded. For web lashings only maximum hand force of 50 daN (1 daN = 1kg) shall be applied. Attention! No mechanical aids to be used as levers, bars etc. unless it is indicated.
  2. When you attach lashings, ensure that it is not twisted or knotted!
  3. Be attentive to not damage lashing or lashing label on sharp edges. (Use corner protection).
  4. Remember to check the tension force shortly after the journey has started or entering warm areas!
  5. The load should be evenly attached (regarding the angles of lashing to the surrounding)!

In general, about web lashings

  1. Web lashing systems should be stored under dry, ventilated conditions, protected against the effects of weather and aggressive substances. Web lashing systems are to be dried naturally. (Not to be dried by placing them near a fire or other sources of direct heat).
  2. Do not let webbing / part of lashing drag on the ground or on deck.
  3. Webbing can be used in the temperature range from -40°C to 120°C.
  4. Polyester webbing is resistant to acids in moderate concentration and at low temperature but attacked by alkalis. If contaminated, it should be removed from service immediately, thoroughly soaked in water and dried naturally.
  5. Any accident with unknown chemical product, the web lashing shall be removed from service!

Maintenance

Lashings and any attached fittings or coupling components should be subject to frequent, regular inspection in addition to an initial thorough examination by a competent person. Visual examination after each use is recommended and if any doubts withdraw the equipment from service.

The lashing must be withdrawn from service, and scrapped if the answer is Yes to any of the below questions,

A visual check before use:

  1. Is the label and/or the text on the label missing?
  2. Are there any cuts, wear marks, nicks, friction or breaks in load bearing fibres and retaining stitches?
  3. Deformation from exposure to heat?
  4. Visible deformation or damages?
  5. Worn cog wheels?
  6. Obvious corrosion on metallic parts?
